Music
Mission
The mission of the Music Department is to provide a physically and emotionally safe environment where students can explore all aspects of music: singing, playing instruments, listening and creating/improvising/composing.

Goals
The three major student goals of the music program are the following:
- To give students the skills and experiences to become joyful life-long music makers
- To help students become confident, competent musicians who are able to interact in a developmentally appropriate manner with music on a variety of levels
- To help students understand and respond to music created in different time periods and in different parts of the world, and to be able to relate that music to music they hear outside the classroom, and to other arts and academic areas
As you begin to realize that every different type of music, everybody's individual music, has its own RHYTHM, life, language and heritage, you realize how life changes, and you learn how to be more open and adaptive to what is around us.

This is my fifteenth year teaching music at Achieve Language Academy, and my seventeenth year in the profession. I also direct the 5-8 grade choir and the concert band and am studying choral conducting and taking classes to become a more expressive conductor.
I teach using the philosophy of Orff-Schulwerk, a music teaching system developed in the 1930s in Austria by Carl Orff and Gunhild Keetman, which emphasizes singing, speaking, movement, and playing instruments, with the children creating their own music. I am also studying choral conducting, and am taking classes to become a more expressive conductor. In my non-teaching time, I am a licensed cosmetologist – for over 27 years – with a legal licensed salon in my home. I enjoy cutting and coloring hair.
I also play flute in the Lex-Ham Community Band, sing with the House of Hope Motet Choir, and am a member of Taikollaborative, a community based taiko (Japanese drumming) group. In the summers I work at Mori no Ike, the Concordia Language Villages Japanese Village, teaching taiko and studying Japanese language and culture.
I have been a member of Midway Green Spirit Garden for the past six years, growing vegetables in my community garden plot. I am married, have two adult children, and a dog. I enjoy long distance biking, and often ride to work (about ten miles).
